March 20: seedlings sprouting and new greenhouse in the making!

On Tuesday Amy and Bill and Heather and I planted 11 1/2 flats of seeds.   The tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli are all starting to sprout so I turned their boxes over so they would get light through the lids. A few more days inside and they'll be ready for the greenhouse.    Which is fantastic.  We're building a new greenhouse for the farm.  It's tall enough to stand in the middle. And sooooo sturdy.  Should be finished this week!

March 17: potatoes in, new strawberry bed started

Bill Hopkins and I planted potatoes today and spinach and lettuce.  The spinach and lettuce I planted 2 weeks ago is coming up!   But this new batch might be slower since we're having collier weather again. One pea poked through the soil.  Hopefully more will follow soon.

Tarragon and chives are six inches tall and tarragon and rhubarb are a couple of inches tall.  Exciting time of year!

We also started a new strawberry patch in the old blueberry bed.  Bill dug and added manure earlier and also weeded and thinned the original strawberry patch.  Then I weeded the asparagus patch and put in stakes and strings to keep folks from walking on our baby strawberry and potatoes plants.

March 6: peas and lettuce!

After I covered peas, I planted small amounts of
4 kinds of spinach and 5 kinds of lettuce.  Hoping for pea pods and lettuce for May 24 SAGE luncheon.

Weeded rows 7, 9, 11, and 12 (row 1 already weeded) (row 8 already weeded, planted in peas and lettuce) (row 11 good, planted in garlic in Oct.:  most garlic is up with frostbitten tops--must have come up in late fall or earlier this winter....but it will be fine.  I dug down to see if the rows that hadn't come up were still good, and found garlic with roots and just starting to sprout...so patience!)  Amazing to have so much down so early!

Raked burnt stalks off of asparagus bed and 

then added 6 1/2 wheelbarrows full of last year's manure.  Would love for the asparagus to come a little later than usual because of May SAGE luncheon.

Washed all the seedling trays today!

Worked in the garden today.  Burned the asparagus patch and dug and spread manure on bed 8 so it is ready for planting peas and lettuce in March!

Time plan for next summer and to order seeds!

Always like to get this done in January....here I am on Jan 30...finally a plan for the 2016 garden.  Was actually very easy, since I established this new rotation plan with 12 beds (4 groups of 3 beds of compatible vegetables, all move to the north 3 beds each year.)
